Bio4A

DWG Next's Partner, Angela Grassi, through our Allied Partner, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies, led the communication and dissemination workstream of the BIO4A project under the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme between 2018 and 2022, providing technical support for data management planning and driving stakeholder engagement and workshop-based market exploitation activities.

BIO4A advanced the industrial-scale production and market uptake of sustainable aviation fuel in Europe, with a focus on the HEFA pathway using residual lipids including Used Cooking Oil. The project enabled large-scale, pre-commercial production of ASTM-certified fuel within the EU and validated the full SAF value chain and logistics under real market conditions. In parallel, the project investigated alternative feedstock supply options, including the cultivation of drought-resistant Camelina on marginal Mediterranean lands, and assessed agronomic practices such as biochar application and soil amendments to enhance soil fertility, climate resilience, and carbon sequestration. The SAF produced, fully compliant with conventional ASTM jet fuel standards, was supplied to commercial airlines for use in regular passenger flights, directly supporting EU objectives for the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.
